Description:
The Executive Director is responsible for the management of the Executive & Leadership Teams and the organization as a whole. Responsibilities include: creating and executing an annual work plan, responding to external requests, acting a liaison with City staff, ensuring the overall direction of the organization is in line with governance policies and the membership, membership development, and working with the Coordinator on funding, policy, and personnel issues.
The Executive Director is expected to attend all Executive, Leadership, and Cabinet meetings each month, typically on Thursday evenings. Executive Director must fall within the TYC's age range: 13-24 years old.

Ideal candidates will have:

  • An interest in politics and/or public policy, particularly at a municipal level
  • A strong desire to create positive change for and with the young people of Toronto
  • An understanding of an anti-oppression framework
  • Senior leadership experience with youth/student organizations and/or political/advocacy organizations and/or grassroots/volunteer-led organizations
  • A history of working positively within teams and promoting collaboration

The 2016 Annual Identify 'N' Impact Awards

On January 27th, 2017, the Toronto Youth Cabinet held their 9th Annual Identify 'N' Impact Award Show, where we celebrated the achievements of youth in communities across Toronto.  This year, five awards were given to exceptional youth for their efforts in building a better tomorrow. We also had performances from phenomenal young artists. Congratulations to all the winners, and thank you to everyone who attended the INI Awards!

Your First Cabinet Meeting: What to Expect

Welcome to Toronto Youth Cabinet! Our monthly Cabinet Meetings are where we share our ideas about TYC’s work, learn about different issues at City Hall, and plan for upcoming events and initiatives. We meet on the 2nd Thursday of every month at City Hall. Our meetings are open to all youth age 13-24 who live, work, or learn in the City of Toronto. Here’s what you can expect:

Before the meeting
Sign up for our mailing list to keep up with all TYC’s events and news. Once a month, we’ll send you an EventBrite invitation for a Cabinet Meeting. Check out the invite to read the agenda and find out the room number.

During the meeting

  • 6:00-6:15pm: Welcome & Food

  • 6:15-7:00pm: Reports, Presentations & Discussions
    First, we’ll go over what happened at the last meeting, and each member of the Leadership Team will share updates. Next we’ll have a discussion or a presentation about an issue in the City of Toronto, or we’ll facilitate a skills-building workshop. If there’s something you’d like to learn about or discuss, feel free to contact the Director of Organizational Development (nishi@thetyc.ca) with suggestions!

  • 7:00-8:00pm: Breakout sessions
    At your first meeting, the Chair will offer a short orientation to TYC. You’ll have a chance to ask any questions, get a picture of TYC’s structure, and learn more about what we’ve been working on.

After that, you’ll check out our Working Groups. Working Groups are the backbone of TYC - each group engages in advocacy and runs events around a specific topic. Working Groups meet at different times throughout the month, but Cabinet Meetings are a chance to share ideas and make plans for the next month.

Make sure to stay connected with your Working Groups through email or Slack to get involved in their initiatives and continue your conversations.  After attending 3 Cabinet Meetings, you’re officially a TYC “Member”, meaning you’re able to get volunteer hours for school and other cool opportunities.

Deputation on the 2017 Budget

On January 10th, our Executive Director, Tom Gleason, gave a deputation at City Council's Budget Committee on the TYC's concerns and suggestions for the 2017 Operating Budget. Check out the video and speech below!

Text:

Good evening Budget Committee,

On behalf of the Toronto Youth Cabinet, I would like to thank you for this opportunity to speak tonight.

I am here to express our concern over the long-term structural issues around the Budget. Over the past few years, Council has made the policy decision to pursue annual cuts, which weaken the services many Torontonians rely upon. Strong Housing, transit, health, and social services are key to ensuring a prosperous and equitable City. 

While expenditure management is always an important piece of the budget process, staff have repeatedly reported that we have a revenue problem. While this budget takes some steps to address this, we wish it would go further. We recommend two strategies:

Peg property taxes increases to the rate of economic growth, which this year would be 3.4%, coincidentally the percentage increase in TTC fares, and;

Support motions that bring our property taxes in line with the rest of the GTA.

With this additional fiscal capacity, we would like to see Council continue to invest in housing, in transit, in services that make citizens healthier and better connected, and reduce reliance upon bridging strategies and the Land Transfer Tax. These strategies would also put us on better footing to request more progressive revenue tools from the Province, which we need if we are to compete with other world class cities like Chicago and New York. 

We cannot build the housing and transit we need in this City on a status quo budget. We need investments, which ideally we would make over a period of time, and not just push off on to younger generations in future years. To paraphrase our Budget Lead: 
stop kicking the can down the road, we’re the end of the road. 

Finally, I would like to echo a message that I believe I delivered this time last year. That is that it would be to our collective advantage if we had community consultations at the beginning of this process and not just at the end. I understand it takes time and can be frustrating, but I think we would benefit from being able to spend the summer months having conversations about the City we would like to build.

Youth Talks: (un)Employment

Sitting at 22%, Toronto's youth unemployment rate is higher than ever. Now, more than ever, we need a cohesive municipal strategy that supports, funds and encourages employment opportunities for youth.

The Toronto Youth Cabinet invites you to Youth Talks: (un)Employment, a public townhall that discusses the barriers facing youth today, and how we, as Torontonians, can advocate for greater access to employment services. Come learn about some Toronto-based programs that can enhance your professional experiences and skills, and speak first hand to our three expert panelists, that know a thing or two about youth employment.

Expert Panelists:

Vass Bednar: As the Chair of the federal Expert Panel on Youth Employment and a member of Airbnb's public policy team, Vass has travelled across the country to speak to Canadian youth. She carries with her, a unique policy-focused perspective to tackling youth unemployment.

Othniel Litchmore: In his various capacities, both as the founder and host of 'Making it in Toronto' podcasts and Senior Program Design and Development Analyst at the Ontario Public Service, Othniel brings a great deal of insight to the table. Hear about his personal journey and listen to what he has learnt from his peers.

Toronto Community Benefits Network: has built a strong community-labour partnership with a support base of workforce development agencies, learning institutions and funders. Come and explore how they envision Toronto as an inclusive, thriving city in which all residents have equitable opportunities to contribute to healthy communities and a prospering economy.

New guidelines for TYC Membership & volunteer hours

TYC membership is changing!

After many discussions, we are introducing some new guidelines for TYC Membership and eligibility for volunteer hours with the Toronto Youth Cabinet.

Introducing TYC Supporters

We recognize that there is some discrepancy in the work done by those involved in the TYC. To address this, we've created a new TYC Supporter category. TYC Supporters are those involved that have attended less than 3 of the last 7 Cabinet meetings and are not actively involved in a Working Group. TYC Supporters are welcome to join in conversations, participate in meetings, and attend events. TYC Supporters are not eligible for volunteer hours.

TYC Members

The Toronto Youth Cabinet is completely volunteer led and we really value all the effort and work put in by our members. That's why we have created these new membership guidelines: to show our appreciation for our volunteers and make membership more meaningful. TYC Members are now described as those who have attended at least 3 of the last 7 Cabinet meetings or who are actively involved in a Working Group. Like Supporters, TYC Members are able to join in conversations, participate in meetings, and attend events. TYC Members are also able to get volunteer hours for the work they do and meetings they attend and be eligible for special opportunities, including external advisory bodies and special events. 

When you make the jump from Supporter to Member, you will be able to receive volunteer hours accumulated to that point.

Only the Executive Director and Director of Internal Affairs are able to sign-off on volunteer hours.

Announcing the TYC Strategy & Innovation Working Group

The Strategy & Innovation Working Group aims to develop creative strategies for meaningful engagement and to drive positive policy outcomes.

Projects include: 2017 Youth Week, TYC Hackathon, 2018 election engagement planning, and political strategy.

All roles are volunteer with a 2-3 hour/ week time commitment. Benefits of getting involved include: develop leadership abilities, build your resume, make new connections, meet with local decision-makers, gain experience with high-profile initiatives, learn about local politics and governance.

Requirements:
- excellent time management & teamwork/ collaboration skills
- ability to check messages at least every 24 hours
- past leadership experience and/or knowledge of municipal politics/ governance is an asset
- a desire to work on large and dynamic projects and drive change

Roles:

Strategy & Innovation Lead

Description: The Strategy & Innovation Lead will work closely with the Executive Director and Director of Community Engagement in coordinating all Working Group projects. The Lead will be required to attend Leadership Team meetings on the first Thursday of the month and Cabinet Meetings on the second Thursday of each month. Lead should have knowledge of municipal issues and experience leading teams. Strategy development and implementation experience is an asset.

Associate, Project Management

Description: The Associate, Project Management will coordinate the development of several projects to ensure group remains on track and meets all deadlines. Experience with project management tools/ strategies, including Gantt charts, an asset.

Associate, Partnerships

Description: The Associate, Partnerships will forge and manage new external relationships and partnerships in order to maximize impact of projects.

Associate, Design

Description: The Associate, Design will oversee the promotion, content development, user experience, and visual components of the projects. Event coordination would also be an asset.
